Effective interation between XMEC and MEC

Dear XMECians,

Welcome to the XMECian blog, a forum to get all the XMEC initiatives published.

The discussion on increasing the XMEC-MEC interaction has been going on for many years, and in the last 1 year some discussions have been happening among the alumni members, students (mainly the placement committee) and MEC staff (Principal Dr. Sureshkumar and team). College and students have shared some thoughts on the needs and thoughts on how we could contribute; and from our side we have also been compiling some ideas.

How does this work currently?

Many of us have been involved in various activities related to MEC, and have been contributing in various ways - Handling information sessions, Guidance on projects, Career counseling, XMEC scholarship, Placement assistance etc. Most of these have been happening informally and in many cases depended an individual's initiative.
  • Social Assist helped in starting the scholarship programme
  • AICTE's NBA is visiting MEC for review, and would like to meet alumni members. Staff members contact few XMECians informally and few volunteers travel to MEC
  • Placement season has started and the placement cell needs help on - List of companies, Updated contacts, Appointments, Resume review, Interview preparation etc.
  • Mr.X is visiting Ernakulam and is interested in talking about the domain he works in, calls up a staff member or student and arrange for a session

What is the plan going forward?

The first initiative in this direction is the proposal to setup a cell for alumni interaction. Many of you who have done higher studies in India or abroad would have seen alumni interactions being handled by dedicated administrative staff members specifically hired for this task. In the absence of that, we are proposing a students+staff+alumni model to make this work. Some of the activities we could think of taking up are:
  • Mentoring - Technical, Projects, Soft skills
  • Guest lecture - Technical, Management
  • Placement assistance - Resume review, Mock interviews, Guiding the placement committee
  • Monetary contribution - Funds for equipments, events
  • Assisting events - Participate in events like Excel as guide, judge
  • Social assist - Volunteering for XSA activities, student selection process for scholarship
The details are being worked upon currently and you should be getting an update sometime in March 2011 on this. Needless to say that we would need good participation from our side to make this happen and hence would be looking for volunteers for various activities.

Please feel free to post comments with your feedback and ideas, or send an email to xmec-execom@yahoogroups.com

Stay tuned for further updates.

Thanks,
